Dwayne Wong (Omowale) joins Jared Ball and Josh, a Black Men Build organizer from Miami, on I Mix What I Like to talk about his book Political and Intellectual Legacy of Walter Rodney. Dwayne was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and he says the book is “a bit more personal than most topics that I’ve written about because of my connection to that history via my mom.” She attended some of Rodney’s lectures, and a neighbor in the Working People’s Alliance hid protest signs at her house.
He shows a Saint Vincent government gazette that lists Rodney and Kwame Ture among activists banned from the island. He explains why Rodney believed intellectuals should go to the masses where they are and serve them. He covers neocolonialism, what Rodney took from Amílcar Cabral, why Rodney praised Marcus Garvey, and the walkie-talkie bomb that killed Rodney.
He argues that “Walter Rodney was not one of those Pan-African historians who had a romantic view of African history.” He ends with his critique of Ivan Van Sertima’s They Came Before Columbus.
