Outreach without activism is only a photo op

A recorded conversation, which Dwayne’s channel credits to Nehemiah X, on why Black communities organize so little. One speaker says there are more churches than liquor stores where he lives. He points to Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum and the Shrine of the Black Madonna, but says many people are still not interested in reading and studying their own history.
National figures such as Umar Johnson draw a crowd, they argue, but people go home and nothing happens: “we’re becoming event junkies.” Outreach without activism is only a photo op, and groups without a mission statement or a point plan get nothing done. They cite a Pine Hills council meeting and an event about Trayvon Martin in Sanford that hardly anyone attended.
They also discuss Orlando’s District 5. Its Black neighborhoods are divided, they say, while a smaller white community there holds the voting power, because so few Black residents vote locally, and Black residents do not control the area’s economics.
