Dwayne Wong (Omowale), a Pan-Africanist historian from Guyana and a co-founder of the Federation of African Liberation, was interviewed by host Tonya Cherie about a hurricane that had devastated Abaco and Grand Bahama, two of the roughly 700 islands making up the Bahamas. He described communities wiped out and Grand Bahama’s only airport destroyed, leaving people without shelter, food, or clean water. He traced the damage to colonial history: Britain built the Bahamas as a slave colony and never developed it, and it did not gain independence until 1973. He said the islands still depend on a fragile tourism economy.
Dwayne compared the Bahamas to Katrina, the 2017 Barbuda hurricane, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a cyclone in Mozambique, arguing Black communities get less media coverage and less disaster preparation worldwide. He warned of post-disaster land grabs, said Barbuda’s recovery funds went unaccounted for, and urged viewers to give directly to Bahamians they can reach, not unfamiliar charities.
