0:00AOkay, so yeah, um, I’m Jeannie Sutherland, and when I was 4 years old, I, I did a drawing of a turtle with a top hat, and I got so much attention for it, and I was like, oh. And then I did a monkey with a bolo hat, and then I just kept going. And so all my life I was doing my artwork.

0:24ABut then when I was in high school, I was thinking of being a wildlife conservationist. Conservationist, or I was trying to decide between that and art, and I stuck with the art. But guess what?

0:37AAnd I got wildlife. So I’m still including the wildlife conservation only in image form. So now I’m retired and I do my artwork, and I’m part of a cooperative gallery, which I absolutely love.
0:55BAnd so what’s it been like, yeah, being a part of this kind of artistic community? That’s why I didn’t -- I just, I’ve just been documenting stuff, but this is super cool. I’m very happy to be here.
1:05AYeah, I absolutely love it. I did belong to an eco-village once, and it’s -- it was also a co-op, a cooperative community. Um, I just thought about it the other day. I’ve belonged to so many communities, and it’s just my thing. I just love it so much. Um, yeah. I’m not really a business person per se, but I mean, I do sell my work, but I’m more about -- these are like my babies, you know? I’m like the Humane Society trying to find homes for my babies. So, um, yeah.
1:41BHas your spring sale been lucrative? Have things been finding homes?
1:47AI’ve been finding a few homes, but to be honest with you, March and April are the -- well, January is the slowest month in the year for sales, and then February, and then it slowly gets better. But people are doing their taxes right now, and then sometimes when they get their tax return, they might be really inspired to spend.

2:10AYeah, but in the meantime, um, it’s just starting to take off. Like, I sold 2 today.

2:16AThank you. And then I sold one like a few days ago. Um, yeah.
2:22BAnd do you sell like digital prints?
2:24ADigital prints?
2:27BLike, could people like buy it and then print it out themselves? Or like, could you mail it to them? Digital prints is wrong, sorry. Do you sell like prints people can have mailed to them?
2:33AOh, like Etsy and all those? I have prints, but like I said, I’m not a business person, and so I don’t want to, um, send them out. But I have like these -- these are prints up here.

2:50BYou know, I didn’t realize these were yours too. I was trying to get them in the frame. That’s good that you turned me. Yeah, I like these mugs. These are cool.

3:01ASometimes people love my work, but they don’t want to put something on the wall. And, um, this is cool. So yeah, so I put them on mugs as well. Yeah, so that they have an opportunity to still have the artwork. It’s like some people make cards.
3:17BYou make laser art engravings?
3:19AOh yeah, I had some light box dioramas, but I sold all of them.
3:23BOh wow, that’s cool.
3:24AYeah, I just sold my last one a few days ago.
3:27BOh, congrats. Yeah, that’s fantastic.
3:29AThank you. And then I -- these, I call them wildlife wood scraps because I would have like pieces of wood left over. And so I was like, oh, okay, I’m gonna just -- so like, okay, here is the original. I flipped it, but that’s the painting in a print form. And then I took that and then I, I put it -- I did some Photoshopping so that I put it on top of a dam and everything. And that’s when I -- and I laser engraved it.
3:59BThat’s cool.
4:00AAnd then I did this in the back so people can hang it on their wall.
4:03BMy great aunt might like that. My great aunt, she takes like full branches and she like does like walking sticks and like she’ll put whole like, uh, portraits and stuff on them and stuff like that.

4:11BShe does like whole collages out of wood.
4:13AAnd I belong to another cooperative. Well, it’s not a cooperative, it’s a community. It’s called Hatchspace.

4:22AYeah. And so I get -- I, um, that’s where I made all --
4:28BThat’s how I get out of editing. I just make sure I put it right in the frame when you talk about it. That’s not how I get out of it, but that’s my approach. Somebody, whoever edits this, is gonna be mad. You know, you could shop for someone to edit.
4:40AYeah, so, um, so I did this squirrel painting and these guys.

4:45AYeah, this, uh, not squirrel, I’m sorry, skunk. I’m sorry.
4:48BIt’s okay. I was like, dang, I said I’m not confused.
4:52AUm, I have a skunk behind my house. And, um, you said you have a lot by your house? Yeah, behind my house I have different animals.
5:01BYeah.
5:02AUm, I have seen a bear near my house, but they’re not frequent. And that’s a good thing because people freak out when they see bears.
5:09BYeah, absolutely. You freak out when you see bears?
5:11ANo.
5:12BOh, you say people. I’m like, you’re not us.
5:15ANo. When I saw -- when I saw a bear the first time in my life, I went out and I stood there and looked at it, and my landlord came and he started yelling to scare the bear.
5:27BOh yeah.
5:28AAnd I just stood there because the bear was going into the trash can, and then the bear ran off and, and my Landlord ran off, and then I was still standing there, and then like 5 minutes later the bear popped its head up over the dam from down below and it came for me. And I wasn’t scared. Well, these guys, they don’t hurt people.
5:52BYeah, they’re just living life.
5:53AWell, um, grizzly bears are different. A grizzly bear, they, they, you know, they go, um, And they do more herding of people and animals. But these are black bears, and they do things like eat berries, things like that.
6:11BOkay.
6:12AAnd garbage, of course.
6:13BThat’s a good lesson then.
6:15ABlack bears are our friends. Well, I actually prefer this black bear. I’m not really happy with that one yet.
