Keeping it real in a wide open regrowth area: Kalib.
Kalib, a musician, in the first of four short clips from one sitting at the songwriting camp in Denver, March 2026, the week Maceo documented for the Blunts and Blondes writing camp. The compliment he is paying is authenticity: “You’re not playing a facade. You’re yourself, real deal.” Asked where hip-hop culture is when you look across the scenes, California, Detroit, Atlanta, Florida, he answers for his own: “We’re in a wide open regrowth area. It’s like a fucking NBA franchise that once sucked,” the kind that “ended up winning a fucking championship.”
What that opens up, in his words: “It’s so more accessible for us as artists to be artists, but also to wake the fuck up.” Then the warning that comes with it. “God taking you to the water and if you’re not going to drink the water, somebody else is going to drink it and they’re going to pass you by.” The person you could have hired is now hiring you, and “They didn’t assassinate their character while trying to do it, they just remained themselves.”
The other three clips from the same sitting are linked below: rap as a business, where the real revenue is (’you’re not making money as an artist unless you’re getting paid to do shows’), his favourite songs right now, heard ’as an artist that is now doing certain things professionally,’ and music in Saint Petersburg and Tampa. Language is unfiltered. The transcript below is from the original audio.
