Saucy Saucier, the full conversation.
How a global pizza party that reached a hundred countries started: two people on Clubhouse during lockdown, an art rabbit hole, and one five-hour conversation that somebody missed because they had to go back to work.
The origin, in Saucy Saucier’s telling, begins with street art rather than crypto. “I signed up for all the art rooms on Clubhouse and I started going through it and they were talking about NFTs, and I was like, I do not have a clue what that is. So I went down this big rabbit hole.” It was early 2021 and, as they put it, “there wasn’t a minute of the day that you couldn’t go on and find some room.”
Then the part that decided it. Someone called Snacks mentioned he was from Philly. “One day when I was back at work, I was taking a lunch break and I went on a room, and we started talking about what things to do. And I was like, listen, I got to bounce, I have to go back to work. Then I came back five hours later, they were still there talking. He’s like, wait till you hear what we dreamed up.”
What they had dreamed up: “We’re going to sell NFTs and use the money to buy pizza.”
The reply is the best line in the piece. “I said, were you smoking weed the whole time I was working? Because that sounds crazy.”
They started building in March and launched live on Bitcoin Pizza Day, 22 May 2021, at a party in New York during NFT NYC, at what they describe as the absolute height of it.
Five years later it was four hundred parties in over a hundred countries, and this camera was at the Philadelphia one.
