Carol drops game.

Five minutes at Bitcoin Pizza Day in Philadelphia, in the middle of the event. The tape starts mid sentence and does not slow down.

Most of it is Carol on a group she calls “the core community”, the Rise Up Morning Show, which she rates for a pairing she says is uncommon, “the most ethical and knowledgeable” people she has met in crypto, and “that combination is rare”. What makes them worth it, in her telling, is what they do not do. “they’re technically like influencers. They’re not going to sell you tokens.” They will tell you how to join, then how to stop: “they’ll tell you how to join the group and then leave it and get a full month for free.” The invitation she quotes back is “please do it, just come learn with us”.

The reason she stayed is a confession about what she was doing before. “I’ve been in there about a year and a half, and before I joined in there, I was losing constantly.” She was, she says, “buying all kinds of crap coins trying to get, you know, 100x”. Somebody off camera supplies the word for it, gambling, and she takes it without a fight: “Yeah, I was totally gambling, and I thought I was doing something.”

Then the actual game, which is arithmetic rather than a call. She credits a member she names as Will Watson with the line she now runs on: “if you get 7% 12 times, you double your money.” In practice that means taking profit in pieces. “I’ll take a little bit at 7%, I’ll take a little bit at 15%, but I’m always holding something for 85-90%.” The rest is homework the group does out loud, “How to look stuff up on DeFi Llama, how to find TVL, how to make sure people are actually making money in the project”, instead of the pitch she has heard too often, the one about “someday, what if, if 17 things go right, we might be profitable”. Her verdict on it: “It’s really wonderful.”

The middle of the tape is the day itself, and it runs on coincidence. She had never heard of the pizza story until recently, and now lives just down the road from it. She has photographed one of the people at the centre of it, “I just photographed him”, and she reads the whole afternoon accordingly: “So I feel this is a full circle, meant to be kind of moment.”

The last stretch is about who found whom. “our guys, Kevin and Alex and Will, the heart and soul of the Rise Up Morning Show” ran into someone at the consensus event in Miami a month before, “And they all connected like magnets in the most classic human ways”, and three weeks later everybody is standing here. She calls that “pretty hopeful”. Then the mic changes hands, the conversation turns to living through something ugly, and the tape cuts before the story lands.
