Dwayne says the book grew out of his membership at First Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the sermons of its pastor, which led him to argue that Christianity was meant to be a religion of radical change and uplift, not the tool of conquest it later became.
He argues the religion did not begin in Europe. Its early history unfolds in Asia and North Africa, and Ethiopian Christians once sheltered believers fleeing persecution in Rome. He walks through pre-colonial African concepts of God, citing Moses’s Cushite wife, Zipporah, and her father, a priest who instructed Moses, and the Egyptian concept of Ma’at, and argues enslaved readers of Exodus took from it a call to rebel, not obey. He also discusses Marcus Garvey on the Queen of Sheba, the Curse of Ham, and why white nationalists have targeted Black churches.
