Jared Ball interviewed Dwayne Wong (Omowale) on his show I Mix What I Like, posted to the Black Liberation Media channel around Memorial Day. Dwayne argued, as he has across his Medium articles, that ADOS founder Yvette Carnell’s claims about Pan-Africanism come from unfamiliarity with the movement’s history, and that no Black American struggle has advanced without a Pan-African or diaspora component.
He traced the Pan-African Congresses from W.E.B. Du Bois’s first gathering through the mass movement Nkrumah and Padmore built at the fifth congress. He also explained his criticism of the Ninth Pan-African Congress, to be held in Togo: Togo’s first president, Sylvanus Olympio, was assassinated in a coup, and the government that followed, now led by the coup leader’s son, uses Olympio’s image and Walter Rodney’s to promote Pan-Africanism while suppressing Togo’s own organizers, a struggle Dwayne has supported since 2017.
He also compared CARICOM’s reparations plan to ADOS’s and described his approach to ideology, following Malcolm X, as deliberately flexible.
