At 23, Dwayne Wong (Omowale) joined the Steel Pan Vibes radio show in May 2015. He left Guyana at three and studied at Florida International University. His parents shaped his consciousness. His father introduced him to Malcolm X and Bob Marley. His mother went to Walter Rodney rallies.
He talks about his first three books. Kingdoms and Civilizations of Africa is a short introduction. The Black African Crisis in the Age of a Black President argues that African American communities still face the problems they had before Barack Obama took office. Malcolm X, Bob Marley, and Other Essays covers Kwame Nkrumah, Eric Williams, the 1970 uprising in Trinidad and powerful African women.
On police killings in Ferguson and Baltimore, he says young people are afraid and that African history helps him cope. He says only about 50 Black-owned bookstores remain in the country. He calls the steel pan, built from discarded oil drums, a sign of African genius.
