AlyV, a producer and DJ, is asked which sub-genre of dance music appeals to him most, and does not want the question. “I kind of just like consume and like listen to music and create without thinking about like genres.” If people had to label it: “wonky, like, space, bass, I guess, you know? Glitch, some glitch hop.” The multiplying genres are fine by him, because they make “more space for little niches that people can connect with.”
What he cares about is keeping it human: live instruments, vocals, drums, “even using like hybrid drums or all electronic drums. It’s still like everything just is still you try to humanize it and like make it real.” Then the line the piece turns on: “that’s just like the counterbalance to AI is holding on to whatever like little shreds that we have of like human humanity, you know, and like our own human like experience, which is not perfect.”
The work is lonely, he says, and worth it for the room. “They just want to like connect with real people like get outside of their house get back from behind their computers and like that’s what I think dance music has going for it right now. I think we should double down on the culture and like just build people up.”
