0:00 I'm going to introduce Tori Sample, who's leading all humanitarian efforts for Stellar, and she can tell you a little bit more about the Stellar's personal platform and why what they're doing is so important, not just for, you know, young banks or migrants or refugees, but also, you know, for a lot of us here who are creators, there's a lot of strong implications of what they're building for creators, too. But I'll let her get more into that. And without further ado, up here or down here? I get to be even less scripted than usual, which is great, so thank you all for showing up, please take a look around and see all of the amazing artwork and the stories that are featured, we're really here today to showcase real world people, you and I are those people, and my dreams living in Mexico City are those people, creators around the world are those people, and so our goal is to come together as a community,

1:10 and showcase how some of the underlying systems and tools that may be not so interesting day-to-day actually affect the lives of normal people around the world. So here today we are sharing the same presence of Trump, which I've mentioned is a shelter for migrants who are seeking asylum as they need places like Venezuela. They need money in order to get through that journey, but you can imagine the life of somebody on the road can be really tough. I am a member of the U.S. That requires sometimes a bank account, which can be impossible to get if you are a refugee or a migrant from another country.

1:50 That can require carrying cash, which is really dangerous. And so what we do is we look for creative ways around that to empower people to go through their day-to-day lives and make financial decisions that can help them create a better life for them and their family. One specific way that we're doing that is through the Stellar blockchain. Stellar blockchain has been around for about 10 years. Some of you might know it from the Twitter community, but we like to focus on real world utility. So we build products for the real world and as the Stellar Development Foundation, which is the nonprofit behind the Stellar blockchain, we make tools so that other people can solve their own problems in their environment.

2:29 We firmly believe that people living in those contexts around the world are the experts on their own situation And so we give them the tools to build for themselves and their communities Dispelled the content platform of SEP is one way of doing that Basically it's a system that allows organizations to send money to multiple people at once So if you need to pay 2 people or 10,000 people around the world You can do that through this tool And the transactions are processed in 5 seconds You can do 10,000 transactions for one U.S. cent in fees and you can see all of it on the blockchain so you know exactly where your money is at any given point in time. Now, that's kind of cool, fine, whatever, but when you put it in the context of the United Nations Refugee Agency using this to pay people directly onto their phones in Ukraine, that becomes a lot cooler.

3:21 When you talk about paying Uber drivers so that they don't have to wait a week to a month to three months to get paid but they get their money instantly for that day that they worked that becomes cooler. When you talk about migrants making their way through a foreign country that now have digital dollars on their phone that they can use everywhere they go instead of carrying their life savings in cash. That's amazing. That's what we're here to do today. That's part of my story. I work for the Stellar Development Foundation now building these products, but before I did that, I built a digital wallet on Stellar for refugees and migrants in Africa.

3:55 I lived in Moana, I saw people crossing border points and getting searched up and down just looking for cash. You know, that's something that nobody should ever have to go through. That is a not dignifying experience, to put it in very mild terms. And so we built ways for people to take their money with them digitally, to store and transfer and Transfer Their Money across borders, in currencies that they already know and trust, but on the back end, it's all happening on Stellar, so it's way more efficient, it's way more secure, and there are hundreds and thousands of people doing that across the world with this technology, so we're very excited to bring that to you today, happy to answer any questions, and again, thank you so much for coming.

4:35 We have QR codes around, you can donate through Paypal or Coinbase and again let us know if we can answer any questions for you. Thanks so much.

This piece was never on YouTube. It was published straight to a public blockchain in the days it was shot, so it does not depend on any platform. The words above are the transcript of the tape, made the same way as the rest of the archive and not corrected by anyone.
