Web3 Africa in Motion: Highlights From the First Week of September

The first week of September has been nothing short of electric for the We Them Media team. From Lagos to Accra to Safari, we’ve been on the ground capturing stories, streaming live moments, and spotlighting the builders shaping Africa’s Web3 future.

Monday: Web3 Lagos Throwback

We started the week by revisiting highlights from the Web3 Lagos Conference — a weekend filled with fresh ideas, inspiring talks, and conversations that continue to ripple through the ecosystem.

Hitting the Road: ETH Accra Hackathon

By September 3rd, our media team was already in Accra, cameras rolling at the ETH Accra Hackathon. Day 1 set the tone with a lineup of impactful speakers:

• Temi (Filecoin): broke down why Filecoin is redefining data storage. Beyond decentralization, its support for versioning and AI use cases shows how infrastructure is moving from theory into practice.

• Simon Emmanuel (ENS): shared how ENS simplifies wallet addresses and builds digital identity across Web3, making Ethereum more user-friendly.

• Afrishan: unpacked the role of stablecoins in Africa. With adoption hitting 90% in Nigeria, they’re powering trade, freelancing, and savings — but not without questions around centralization and dependency on USD policy.

• 0xKofi (Dune): dived into the power of on-chain data, showing how querying and visualizing transactions can unlock insights for builders and researchers.

• Chiidubem (LiskHQ): walked us through the Lisk ecosystem, its position as an L2 for growth markets, and its developer-friendly infrastructure.

We later caught up with Simon from ENS, who left us with a gem:

“Ghana feels chill, safe, and full of smart people and hidden treasures.”

Day 2 & 3: Workshops, Hackers & Base

Day 2 saw Simon return with a hands-on ENS workshop, while Day 3 captured hackers in their creative flow — building, testing, and pushing boundaries for the hackathon. The day rounded off with the Base Workshop, where Damilare(Base west Africa Lead) broke down how Base is powering onchain communities across Africa.

Spotlighting Builders & SheFi Africa

Later that day, JED XO hosted another Spotlighting African Builders session, this time with Kwame Stalwart from AYA HQ. He spoke on blockchain’s relevance in Africa, the value of community, and his personal journey in the space.

The evening closed with our team at the SheFi Africa Accra Summit, connecting with powerful voices like:

ETH Safari Calling: Kenya Joins the Story

While Accra was buzzing, we also had Aziz on the ground at ETH Safari in Kenya, streaming coverage and bringing our community closer to the action.

From Nigeria to Ghana to Kenya, this week showed the strength of Africa’s Web3 energy. Builders are not just talking — they’re experimenting, teaching, and laying foundations for a decentralized future.
